Moodle Socialwall Course Format

About

The Moodle Socialwall Course Format provides educators an easy to facilitate online component to any class to help lower the barrier for educators entering the eLearning environment.

Our main outcome is to provide a solution that will help lower the barrier of entry for educators entering the eLearning environment. This will be accomplished by creating the new course format called the Social Wall Course Format which will provide educators an easy to facilitate an online component to any class.

The feel of this course format will have a familiar feel if educators and students have used social networks such as Facebook, Edmodo or Twitter. By having a familiar feeling, it will lower the cognitive load for all users. They will spend less time on learning how to use the platform and more time on teaching and learning.

Downloads

The socialwall project is composed of a suite course format, block, filter and helper. To gain the full experience of the project please install all of the following.

Course Format – The Moodle Socialwall will transform your Moodle course into a social learning platform. This includes a familiar post interface, timeline of posts, filtering of the timeline, and integration with Moodle’s activities and resources. A social learning format allows teachers to pick up the tool and begin using it right away.

Alerts Block – This is required by the Socialwall Course Format. This block is used to indicate any due dates for activities such as an assignment or quizzes that have been added to a course. It is very similar to the standard Upcoming events block (calendar_upcoming) but it would also display any alerts posted by the teacher with its date. Alerts are posts with a special flag normally sent by teachers by using the socialwall format for a course.

Filter URL Resource  – This Filter is required for the Socialwall Course Format. The Moodle Socialwall will transform your Moodle course into a social learning platform. This includes a familiar post interface, timeline of posts, filtering of the timeline, and integration with Moodle’s activities and resources. A social learning format allows teachers to pick up the tool and begin using it right away.

Filter URL Backup Helper – This Local Filter is Required to properly use the Socialwall Course Format. If your course displays in socialwall format you are able to use a filter called “URL resource filter”. This is a new filter that will convert a URL resource type http link that is added and will grab the title and a photo similar to how facebook does from the remote website to display it on the course page. This plugin is needed to store the data generated by the filter (like alternative title for the url and selected photo) in the course backup.

Please note the following

Moodle 2.7+ is a requirement

This is the initial release. This is not the final release! We are working on the install process as well as last minute changes and will be releasing a final product later this year.

This course format is best used on a new course.  Existing courses will create problems when switching course formats.

To install you must have access to the Moodle server to perform the install.
